Choosing Engineered Wood for Flooring in Edinburgh

There are many reasons to consider choosing engineered wood over solid wood for your flooring. One of the biggest reasons for this decision is that engineered wood can be fitted over almost any existing floor surface, for example, concrete rather than the need to create a suitable sub-floor. This makes it much easier to fit yourself which will of course significantly reduce the cost of your re-flooring project.

Engineered flooring is typically between 3mm and 7mm in thickness and it topped with a layer of solid wood known as veneer. The underneath is made up of several layers of thin wood which have been glued together to form a “plywood-like sandwich”. This effect is made more stable because each layer is at 90 degrees to the last which makes the layers less prone to movement in reaction to humidity for example.

Engineered wood is available in a larger range of colours and finishes than regular wood since it can be treated more easily to affect its appearance. Another major benefit is that is can be bought “pre-finished” which means no waxing. Waxing can be both a costly and time consuming process. Overall this process makes for increased stability and higher tolerance for moisture.

Of course there are situations where engineered flooring may not be the most sensible option. Just like standard hardwood, engineered wood is not recommended for use in a bathroom. Despite being resistant to movement caused by moisture if it is constantly wet and damp it can still be irreparably damaged.

It is important not to confuse engineered flooring with laminate flooring. Laminate is a poor imitation. It is literally an image of real wood which has been adhered to a resin surface. It is considerable thinner and while it may be easy to lay, it certainly will not last anywhere near as long as its two competitors.
